West Side Story
Du 26/10/2012 au 01/01/2013
The Absolute Musical
For the first and only time in the history of American musical, the choreography – by Jerome Robbins – advances the plot as much as the book does. The 1961 movie, and its 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, made the Jets and the Sharks household names worldwide, and made West Side Story a cult work never equaled.
When West Side Story opened as a musical in New York on 26 September 1956, during the Golden age of Broadway, the critics had no inkling of the phenomenon in the making. The creative team, Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents, had been working for many years on staging an updated version of Romeo and Juliet, without however bringing the project to fruition. With the arrival of Stephen Sondheim in 1955 to write the lyrics, a creative quartet was formed achieving perfect harmony between the libretto, the music, the choreography and the directing.
